"A Community in Christ on the Journey of Faith"
The Board of Evangelism is established by the Constitution and Bylaws of Messiah Lutheran Church to be responsible for public relations and general advertising, witness education, and Gospel outreach at Messiah.
At the April 2007 Voter's meeting there were no candidates to serve as Chairperson of the board and the position was empty until September of 2007. At the September council meeting I, Kathy Morrison, volunteered and was appointed by the Council to fill out the remaining 2 ½ years.
I feel that the task of sharing the good news of Christ is central to the work of the Church. Along with Pastor, the elders, church council and all the members of Messiah, this work is so important that we are in the process of calling a second church worker whose duties will include Evangelism. This doesn't mean that the Board isn't needed, actually it will make the work of the board that more important.
Currently there are five tasks forces setup to lead Messiah in it's Evangelism work - these may expand, change or restructure after a second worker is on board and has had time to look at our needs.
This task force is responsible for our advertising in newspapers, radio, the Lutheran Witness and through posters and handouts. ** The latest project we have been involved in is revision of the Messiah Lutheran website. We hope you enjoy this format and information. Along with this we are exploring developing a logo unique to our community. Those involved in the website are Kristi Dilger (she will also be doing most of the future updating), Rod Bassler, Pastor Baneck, and myself. We will be calling on parishioners to assist with photographing are many activities to update the gallery. Watch for more information on this both here and in the Messenger. With the new fiscal year we plan to look at both radio and television spots about our building and second worker, reedit and reprint our full color pamphlet that we share with visitors and newcomers, assist the building committee in replacing the sign on the south side of the church and designing a marque sign to place on Sunset Drive.
This task force is responsible to follow-up with visitors who signs our guest book or the fellowship rolls and also receives mailings and a personal contact. Jerry also maintains our fellowship rolls in each pew.
I am trying to keep track of some of the needs of this task force. I feel most people are afraid of the idea of Evangelism and I'm hoping our second worker can focus on developing this task force and encouraging leadership. If you might be interested in the area or willing to learn more about this, please contact Kathy.
Pastor and I have not had ideas in how to develop this area and I apologize to Jon for being unaware of what we could be doing with a task force. In many ways the work of the Building committee and the calling of a second worker show our growth planning but we haven't followed through with this planning.
Linda Scheitel is taking on the task of a Mission Festival each fall. I am trying to get together with the Lutheran Women's Missionary League (LWML) to coordinate mission awareness and hope to follow up on this. If anyone is interested in helping with mission growth and awareness please let me know.
